Germany’s political landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), once confined to the fringes of political discourse, is unexpectedly gaining traction among people with migration backgrounds and their communities. The party reshaped its messaging prior to the February 2025 Federal Elections, tapping into socio-economic grievances and cultural narratives to court groups it had previously sidelined. This investigation explores the forces behind this shift, exposing a complex web of contradictions and tensions that ripple through Germany’s migrant communities and beyond.

Portlanders have every reason to be proud of their Forest City (and Bostonians have every right to be jealous): a postcard-perfect New England vacationland with a working waterfront steeped in a rich maritime heritage, world-class seafood, thriving craft beer scene, a flourishing culinary and arts community, the list goes on. Yet, despite all of Portland’s accolades, the city is rarely recognized as a hub for alternative and independent media.

LYSTRUP, Denmark, 5:45 a.m., Nov. 14 — Groups of onlooking neighbors huddled from the wind and rain on the street corners of Hovmarken Road, home to one of the United States’ key weapons-manufacturing partners of the deadly F-35 warplane. An overflowing crate of broccoli, carrots, and leaks is carefully inspected for mold then slid to the back of the fridge. Volunteers, friends, and strangers regularly maintain, give, and take from Foodsharing Aarhus’ common fridge. Their mission is simple: to provide a public space for food sharing free of charge, membership, or judgment. Much of the common fridge’s food comes from an agreement with a local supermarket where volunteers are granted permission to haul soon to be disposed foods.

Portland voters will contend with two ballot questions, concerning rent control (Question A) and the school budget, in the upcoming June 13th municipal elections. The Southern Maine Rental Housing Alliance (RHA), formerly known as the Southern Maine Landlord Association, successfully advanced a citizen initiative referendum to the ballot which seeks to amend the Rent Control Ordinance previously passed by Portland voters in 2020, and later amended this past November 2022. RHA’s proposed amendment would eliminate rental increase limits specifically when a tenant voluntarily terminates their lease.

The concept of a bike share is nothing novel to the City of Portland nor its bike advocates. Over the past decade Portland has seen a revolving door of competitive companies and nonprofits seeking to establish their system. Tandem Mobility, a private bike share operator from Grand Rapids, Michigan, finally won a contract with the City in 2021. Their inaugural bikes hit Portland’s streets in August of 2022 and will return after a winter hiatus in April.
